Below is the CBS factory Sample Bar for referencing all the dichroic color coating names that CBS uses.

Coatings are listed as “TRANSMITTED COLOR / REFLECTED COLOR”. Coatings that do not have a “/” are the REFLECTED colors. These coatings are not usually applied to a Clear base glass as the TRANSMITTED colors are generally very pale and weak.

Dichroic Coated Glass FACTORY SHEETs arrive from the manufacturer, Coatings by Sandberg (CBS), typically in 19" diameter rounds. Depending on the base glass manufacturer (Wissmach, Uroboros, Bullseye, ...), the round sheets in some cases will have two flat sides approximately 16" to 17" inches apart.

Dichroic FACTORY SHEETs can be cut down into 4 QUARTER SHEETS that are approximately 9½x9½" with a rounded side, as shown in the diagram below at left. If the FACTORY SHEET has been trimmed by CBS, then the QUARTER SHEETS will measure closer to 8½x9½" with a rounded side as shown in the diagram below at right. Please note that certain dichroic coatings (such as Rainbow 1) and patterns will result in very different looking QUARTER SHEETS depending on what portion of the FACTORY SHEET the QUARTER SHEET is cut from.

Similarly, 4x4" pieces may also vary considerably in look for certain dichroic coatings (such as Rainbow 1) and patterns depending on what portion of the FACTORY SHEET the 4x4" piece is cut from.

Originally created for the Aerospace industry, Dichroic Glass is now made available to the artist community through Coatings By Sandberg, Inc (CBS). CBS Dichroic Glass is specifically designed to be hotworked in any way but can also be used in its raw form. The main characteristic of Dichroic Glass is that it has a transmitted color and a completely different reflective color. Furthermore, these two colors shift depending on angle of view. With the play of light together with its vibrant color, Dichroic Glass is a prime tool used to add interest to any piece of work or project.

Dichroic Glass is a multi layer coating placed on a base glass by using a highly technical vacuum deposition process. Quartz Crystal and Metal Oxides are Vaporized with an electron beam gun in an airless vacuum chamber and the vapor then floats upward and attaches then condenses on the surface of the glass in the form of a crystal structure. The dichroic colors available from CBS have as many as 30 layers of these materials yet the thickness of the total coating is approximately 35 millionths of an inch. The coating that is created is very similar to a gemstone and by carefully controlling the thickness different colors can be achieved. Thus, all the coatings available from CBS are created using the same exact materials.
